More and more Physics is being done via grid computing: If you have a need to run computations via a grid, you can use the Globus toolkit that is installed in /package/vdt.
csh/tcsh:source /package/vdt/setup.csh
bash/ksh:. /package/vdt/setup.sh
You must have a Grid certificate authorizing you to use whichever grid you need.
